Project Title: Selfies

Description:

• Students reviewed what a selfie was to them and where they would take a picture of themselves.  A setting was first developed using black marker and watercolor paint.  Basic information was offered on how to draw student portraits including placement of facial features, proportion and expressions.  Drawings were transferred to acetate and attached to settings.

April 2017 - Fish

2^nd-3^rd Grade

Project Title: Fish

Description:

• Kindergarten - 3rd Grade were read Happy by Mies van Hout, a book about expressing emotions.  Students planned their drawing using white charcoal pencils.  Next chalk was dipped into water cups and turned to paint resulting in our vibrant, expressive fish.

March 2017 - Mexican Prints

2^nd-3^rd Grade

Project Title: Mexican Prints

Description:

• Students chose an image  from the Mexican culture to recreate.  This image was traced into a foam printing lock using a pencil.  A variety of colored printer ink and fluorescent tagboard were considered before printing their image.  Students experienced the basic process of printmaking as well as learned new art vocabulary.

February 2017 - Still Life Bottles

2^nd-3^rd Grade

Project Title: Still Life Bottles

Description:

• Complementary colors can be used to create a focal point or to emphasize a section of a painting.  This strategy was employed when designing and painting these still life pictures.  2nd and 3rd grade artists drew their still life pictures placing their objects in the center.  Watercolor pencils and crayons were added within black sharpie lines.

Project Title: Picasso Faces

Description:

• Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a Spanish artist known for his style of art called Cubism.  He painted faces that looked like puzzle pieces all out of order.  Picasso was inspired by African masks.  2nd and 3rd grade artists developed a cubist face including frontal and profile views simultaneously.  Assorted complementary collage materials were used to create relief features drawing your eyes throughout each piece.

December 2016 - Mark Rothko

2^nd-3^rd Grade

Project Title: Mark Rothko


Samples of Mark Rothko's art:

Four Darks in Red (1958)

Orange and Yellow (1956)

Description:

• 2nd and 3rd grade artists were introduced to the work of Abstract Expressionist, Mark Rothko (1903 –1970).  We compared and contrasted his color work with that of Josef Albers who was previously studied.  Students quickly discovered his rectangular fields of color with soft edges.  Each student chose warm or cool colors to complete their picture.
